Art is a SCIENCE
Art is MATHEMATICAL
Art is a FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Art is HISTORY
Art is LANGUAGE ARTS
Art is PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Art is TECHNOLOGY
ART IS ALL OF THESE THINGS, BUT MOST OF ALL, ART IS ART
It allows a human being to take all of these dry, technical, and difficult techniques and use them to create intense beauty, and powerful emotional response. This is one thing that science cannot duplicate, mathematics cannot calculate, foreign language cannot translate, history cannot legislate, and physical education cannot replicate.
THAT IS WHY WE TEACH ART!
Not because we expect you to major in Art.
Not because we expect you to create art all of your life.
Not so you can relax or just have a hobby.
WE TEACH ART
So you will be human.
So you will recognize and appreciate true beauty.
So you can communicate from the very depths of your soul.
So you will be sensitive to life and the peoples within it.
So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world.
So you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness -
more life. -Why We Teach Art, Tina Farrell
Yo, yo yo!
My name is Kenzie Helmink and this is my second year at Lesher. I was previously the high school art teacher at Crete High School in southeast Nebraska, but decided it was time to journey toward the mountains to live where I can hike and camp as often as I'd like. I grew up in the small town of Fairbury, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in December of 2014. During my years at Crete High, I worked to build a solid art program and Visual Arts Club, coach several high school and middle school sports, and volunteer my time as a head coach for our school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter (FCA). Here at Lesher I coach 8th grade girls basketball, and long/triple jump for track and field. GO VIKINGS!
During college I participated as a member of the UNK track team for one yer, and later joined the softball team for the remaining three years of my college career. I am a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and He plays the lead role in my life. I base my life, my actions, and my teaching/coaching around Him and I try every day to give all the glory to Him.
I believe the art room should be a FUN, SAFE, RELAXING, CREATIVE, and CRAZY space for students to express themselves, learn new techniques, and create their own techniques.
